1.
When planning a holiday outside of your own country you may face a long; complicated process. On top of the usual tasks of purchasing airline tickets, booking hotels, planning itineraries and making reservations, you may also need to brush up on the cultural norms of the countries you are planning to visit.
2.
In Thailand, for example the head is sacred and should never be touched. Several cultures consider crossing your legs to be rude, as well as showing the sole of the foot, which is a sign of an ill wish. The degree of eye contact that is considered acceptable varies from country to country. A handshake is accepted as the norm almost worldwide, whereas a bow is highly regarded in the Far East.
3.
To avoid making a faux pas when meeting foreigners, it may be best to avoid using humour. Some cultures pay close attention to social hierarchy, so you may have to use formal speech. Meanwhile, some cultures are rather lax, so you can be more casual in your speech.
4.
Getting feedback is the cornerstone of the cultural learning process, because without it, you’ll never really be able to understand what’s expected. When you are abroad, check in with the natives and ask them if they’ve noticed you doing anything that might be culturally inappropriate. This gives them the opportunity to provide feedback.
5.
Most cultures don’t have one-size-fits-all rules for reacting to mistakes. In case of faux pas, verbal and body language that people use may vary, depending on the culture. For example, some smile or bow, others look away. They may address it publicly or discreetly, blame it on others or crack a joke, or simply ignore it and act as if nothing happened.
6.
When you make a mistake, try to keep your cool. First of all, assess how serious the mistake is you’ve made. Some faux pas are merely amusing, whereas others require an apology. If you’ve learned what apologies look like in the given culture, you can try to deliver an appropriate one.
